NEW YORK, NY — Nintendo announced that pre-orders for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 will not take place on April 9, 2025, as initially scheduled. The company made this decision to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.

In a statement, Nintendo confirmed that while the pre-order timeline is postponed, the official launch date for the console remains unchanged at June 5, 2025. The retail price in the U.S. is set at $449.99, while UK pricing will be £395.99. A bundle option, which includes the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, will also be available for $499.99.

“We are committed to ensuring that our launch strategy meets the expectations of our consumers amid changing market dynamics,” said a company spokesperson. Further updates will provide a new pre-order date, which Nintendo plans to announce later.

Retailers have begun to list multiple launch titles for the Switch 2, which are expected to be available on the same day as the console. Products like the Switch 2 edition of popular games such as ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘ and ‘Breath of the Wild‘ will be included.

Purchasers interested in the Nintendo Switch 2 will have the opportunity to register their interest through the My Nintendo Store. Invitations for purchasing will be sent via email on a first-come, first-served basis, prioritizing users with a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership and at least 50 gameplay hours as of April 2, 2025.

Registration is limited, with eligible accounts able to purchase only one console and one of each accessory during the invitation period. Invitations are non-transferable and valid for 72 hours. Major retailers are also expected to begin pre-orders on the previously scheduled date of April 9, 2025, pending further updates from Nintendo.

In addition, consumers should note that the Switch 2 will not support standard microSD storage cards from previous models. To accommodate storage needs, players will need to purchase compatible variants offered by brands like SanDisk and Lexar, which are already available on platforms like Amazon.

As excitement builds around the Switch 2, industry experts warn that the demand is likely to exceed supply once pre-orders commence. Robert Anderson, a senior editor at IGN, emphasized the importance of following updates on social media and retailer websites to secure pre-orders promptly. “With gaming hardware, timing is everything,” Anderson said.

With just over a year until launch, Nintendo continues to engage with its fanbase, teasing them with further announcements and details. For now, prospective buyers are encouraged to stay alert and prepared for when pre-orders finally go live.
