Nintendo Switch 2 Mockup Revealed at CES, Sparks Speculation
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Nintendo may not have an official presence at CES 2025, but the gaming giant still managed to steal the spotlight. Accessory maker Genki unveiled a 3D-printed mockup of what it claims is Nintendou2019s highly anticipated Switch successor, offering a glimpse into the potential design of the next-generation console.
The mockup, which Genki calls the u201cSwitch 2,u201d suggests a wider console with slightly larger Joy-Con controllers. Compared to the Steam Deck OLED, the Switch 2 mockup feels smaller but closer in size to Valveu2019s handheld than the original Switch. The Joy-Cons appear more ergonomic, though less pronounced than the Steam Decku2019s grips.
According to Genki cofounder and CEO Eddie Tsai, the Switch 2u2019s Joy-Cons will attach magnetically instead of using the sliding rail mechanism of the original Switch. u201cTo detach a Joy-Con, you press a big button at the top of the backside of each controller,u201d Tsai told The Verge. u201cThe button pushes out a pin that nudges against the consoleu2019s chassis, disconnecting the magnets.u201d Tsai added that while the Joy-Cons can be removed with brute force, they feel secure for regular use.
Tsai also revealed that the Joy-Cons may feature an optical sensor within the mounting channel, potentially enabling mouse-like functionality with additional attachments. However, he declined to disclose the source of his information about the new console.
The mockup aligns with recent leaks and rumors about the Switch 2. In December 2024, YouTube channel SwitchUp showcased a 3D-printed, nonfunctional mockup from a Chinese case manufacturer, which hinted at a larger design and a new USB-C port on the top of the device. Days later, accessory maker Dbrand announced its u201cKillswitch 2u201d case, claiming it was based on u201cactual dimensionsu201d from a 3D scan of the real hardware. Dbrandu2019s CEO, Adam Ijaz, also suggested the Joy-Cons would use magnetic attachment.
Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the Switch 2u2019s design or features, but the company has promised an announcement by April 2025. As the deadline approaches, speculation continues to mount, fueled by leaks and mockups like Genkiu2019s. For now, fans will have to rely on these unofficial glimpses to imagine what the future of Nintendou2019s handheld gaming might look like.
