Norma Kamali Unveils Bold New Collection at NY Fashion Week

NEW YORK – Norma Kamali, the acclaimed American fashion designer, showcased her latest Ready-to-Wear collection featuring 32 unique ensembles during New York Fashion Week. The collection, which marries style with practicality, draws inspiration from masculine energy, the artistry of Bob Dylan, and the devastating California wildfires.
In an exclusive interview, Kamali articulated the significance of masculine energy in her collection, stating, “Masculine energy is essential. I got this. I don’t need a man to make it happen for me.” She believes this shift in attitude is especially impactful for women aged 25 to 45, empowering them to take control of their lives and choices.
Kamali continued, explaining how she translates these themes into her designs. “The clothes have a very tough, energetic feel about them,” she said. “I mix them with very feminine pieces. It’s a compatible contradiction that feels good when you wear it.”
The designer also referenced her experiences with nature and the California wildfires, which influenced her new print designs. “My initial reaction to the forest was a deep sense of spirituality and powerful silence,” Kamali recounted. “Watching it burn uncontrollably was profoundly unsettling. Yet, I felt a sense of purpose in my work—it became a tribute to nature.” This connection with the wilderness is reflected in a new intricate tree print created using 3D technology.
Bob Dylan’s influence on Kamali’s work stems not only from his music but also from his approach to fashion. “Dylan understood that wearing makeup or dressing a certain way could create another connection with the audience,” she said. “I’m using the hat extensively in the collection because it invites curiosity about personal stories.”
When discussing elegance amidst the toughness represented in her designs, Kamali specified her approach: “There is an elegance in the shape and in the textures, but it’s the timelessness and classic quality that really stands out.” She highlighted pieces such as a knee-length motorcycle jacket paired with a fedora as examples of this balance.
Another critical facet of Kamali’s collection is her commitment to sustainability, particularly through the use of vegan leather. “Everything in the collection is washable,” she noted. “Avoiding dry cleaning chemicals protects health and reduces ongoing costs, making sustainability accessible.”
As a veteran designer with 57 years in the industry, Kamali approaches each new collection as a natural extension of her identity. “Every cell in my body is geared toward creating another collection,” she explained. “I just surrender to the process and do it.”
