Notorious Former Detective and Killer Cop Roger Rogerson Hospitalised and Close to Death
Roger Rogerson, the notorious former detective and killer cop, who was serving a life sentence, has been hospitalised and is close to death, 9News understands.
The disgraced former police officer was found unresponsive in his cell in the early hours of Thursday morning following a brain aneurysm and is now receiving end-of-life care at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.
Rogerson’s health has significantly deteriorated in the past six months, according to 9News sources.
Having started his police career in 1959, Rogerson was one of the most decorated officers in New South Wales before corruption allegations and links to organized crime were uncovered.
During his 27-year career, Rogerson worked on high-profile cases such as the Toecutter Gang Murder and Brisbane’s Whiskey Au Go Go fire.
In 1980, he received the Peter Mitchell Award for arresting escaped armed robber Gary Purdey.
One of the notable incidents involving Rogerson was the 1981 fatal shooting of drug dealer Warren Lanfranchi, which was deemed as an act in the line of duty. However, Lanfranchi’s girlfriend, sex worker Sallie-Anne Huckstepp, alleged that Rogerson intentionally killed him over a drug dispute.
Huckstepp was found dead in 1986, and her murder remains unsolved.
Rogerson was also charged with the attempted killing of undercover officer Michael Drury in 1984. Drury had rejected a bribe offered to tamper with evidence in a heroin trafficking trial.
In 1989, Rogerson was acquitted of the charges, but he had already been dismissed from service for depositing $110,000 in bank accounts under a false name.
Rogerson served a four-year sentence for perverting the course of justice and an additional 12 months for lying to the Police Integrity Commission in 2005.
In 2014, he was arrested for the execution murder of 20-year-old student Jamie Gao. Along with his associate, former detective Glen McNamara, Rogerson was convicted.
Rogerson’s final appeal against the conviction failed last year.
The current development of his hospitalization and critical condition marks a significant turn of events in his already controversial life.
