Elijah Hughes Notre Dame Defensive Lineman

Notre Dame has bolstered its defensive line with the addition of Elijah Hughes, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound interior lineman transferring from USC. Hughes, who entered the transfer portal on Dec. 17 with a “do not contact” tag, announced his commitment to the Fighting Irish via Instagram on January 11, 2025. He brings two seasons of eligibility to South Bend.

Hughes played in 15 games over two seasons at USC, recording 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Despite limited playing time in 2024, appearing in just seven games, Hughes showed potential as a rotational player. “Humbled and honored to announce that I am committing to Notre Dame football!” Hughes wrote. “To my USC family, thank you for the love, memories, and support over the past few years.”

A former three-star recruit from Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington, Virginia, Hughes was ranked No. 1029 overall in the 2023 class. He chose USC over offers from Duke, Maryland, Miami, and several Ivy League programs. His addition addresses a critical need for Notre Dame, which is losing key defensive linemen Rylie Mills and Howard Cross III to the NFL.

Hughes is the seventh transfer portal commitment for Notre Dame this offseason, joining players like North Carolina kicker Noah Burnette and Alabama defensive back Devonta Smith. He will compete for playing time alongside Gabriel Rubio, Donovan Hinish, and other returning linemen. Hughes is expected to enroll at Notre Dame immediately and participate in spring practices.

Notre Dame’s defensive line depth has been a focus this offseason, with the Irish seeking experienced players to complement their young talent. Hughes’ arrival provides immediate help as the team prepares for the 2025 season and a national championship run.
