Notre Dame’s Mitchell Evans Eyes NFL Draft After Strong College Career
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame tight end Mitchell Evans is making waves as he prepares for the College Football Playoff National Championship against Ohio State, further solidifying his reputation as a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft. The Wadsworth, Ohio, native has emerged as one of the most reliable tight ends in college football, showcasing his skills on the national stage.
Evans, a former three-star recruit, stepped into the spotlight after the departure of Michael Mayer, who set Notre Dame’s all-time receptions record for a tight end before being drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023. Evans patiently waited his turn, contributing primarily as a blocker before seizing his opportunity in 2023. In eight games before a season-ending knee injury, he recorded 29 catches for 422 yards and a touchdown. This season, he added 39 receptions for 369 yards and three touchdowns.
“Mitchell has been a steady force for us,” said Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. “His work ethic and ability to make tough catches have been invaluable to our offense.”
Scouts praise Evans for his elite hands and ability to make contested catches. While he may not possess the same athleticism as Mayer, his fluid route-running and box-out ability make him a reliable target. Evans excels on digs, out routes, and seam patterns, using his explosiveness to create separation.
However, his game isn’t without limitations. Evans occasionally struggles with sharper route breaks due to limited short-area agility. Additionally, while he is a strong blocker, he could improve his leverage and pad level. Despite these areas for growth, his combination of blocking utility, sure hands, and physical mentality make him a promising TE2 prospect at the NFL level.
According to Pro Football Network, Evans has an average draft position (ADP) of 97.0, with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles showing the most interest. In recent mock drafts, he is projected to go No. 146 overall to the Washington Commanders, who may view him as a potential successor to veteran tight end Zach Ertz.
As Evans takes the field in the national championship, he has one final opportunity to showcase his talents before turning his attention to the NFL Draft. His journey from a three-star recruit to a draft-eligible standout is a testament to his perseverance and dedication.
