NWSL Golden Boot Race Heats Up as Teams Battle for Position

Kansas City, Missouri – The race for the 2025 NWSL Golden Boot is intensifying, with Kansas City Current star Temwa Chawinga leading the charge after a record-setting debut season.
Chawinga, who scored 20 goals last season, is again a frontrunner for the prestigious award but faces stiff competition from rising stars across the league. Updated standings as of April 18 reflect the intense battle among the league’s top scorers, showcasing both established players and emerging talents.
This season’s competition takes on new dimensions following an international break that changed team dynamics and standings. The Orlando Pride and Kansas City Current are again vying for top positions, but other teams such as Gotham FC and Angel City are making significant strides up the rankings.
The Utah Royals and North Carolina Courage are currently the only winless teams in the league, raising questions about their performances this season. Both teams have struggled to find their footing, leading to concerns about their ability to turn things around in upcoming matches. “It’s tough to see teams with such talent facing such challenges,” said analyst Melina Espejo.
Notably, the Chicago Red Stars have successfully climbed the standings, securing their first three points of the season with a standout performance from Ludmila, who scored twice. Jameese Joseph notably assisted both of Ludmila’s goals, highlighting the impact of teamwork on the field.
Meanwhile, the Portland Thorns faced challenges as goalkeeper Bella Bixby made an early return due to an injury to Macca Arnold. Bixby’s strong performance included key saves, showcasing her value as a crucial player for the Thorns.
In a recent match against Kansas, the San Diego Wave demonstrated that possession does not always dictate match outcomes. Despite maintaining only 37% possession, they managed to equal Kansas in shots but fell short in converting those opportunities into goals.
Coach Jonatan Giráldez’s team has effectively rested starters while still achieving competitive results, which is a testament to their depth. Ashley Hatch currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with her scoring prowess, maintaining a slight edge over Chawinga and Barbra Banda.
As the league progresses, goalkeeper performances have proven vital. Kansas City’s Lorena made critical saves late in matches to secure victories, while Anna Moorhouse of the Reign has also been instrumental, showcasing exceptional skill and making crucial saves to keep her team competitive.
The NWSL’s power shift continues, with teams like Gotham FC finally realizing their potential. With a strong offensive showing from Esther González and Lilly Reale, Gotham secured its first win of the season. The club’s resurgence raises expectations as they continue to capitalize on their roster’s talent.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen who will claim the coveted Golden Boot and how performances will unfold leading into the playoffs. The NWSL continues to captivate fans with its dynamic and competitive spirit.
