Oilers Acquire Defenseman Jake Walman in Major Trade with Sharks

EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers bolstered their defense Thursday by trading for Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks. The transaction, announced on March 7, 2025, involved sending forward Carl Berglund and a conditional first-round pick in 2026 to San Jose.
Walman, a 29-year-old left-shot defenseman, has been a standout for the Sharks this season, scoring six goals and providing 26 assists for a career-high total of 32 points in just 50 games. He has also played regularly on ice for an average of 23 minutes and 11 seconds per game.
“Let’s do this, Jake!” the Oilers tweeted after the announcement, expressing excitement over the acquisition.
Walman, originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL Draft, has compiled 31 goals and 52 assists over his 252-game NHL career, which also includes stints with the Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He joins the Oilers in a crucial time as they aim for a deep playoff run.
The conditional first-round pick has specific protections: if the Oilers’ 2026 selection falls within the top 12, they can opt to instead transfer their 2027 first-round pick to the Sharks. If Edmonton trades their 2027 pick before the 2026 trade deadline, the 2026 selection will automatically go to San Jose without conditions.
This move comes as the Oilers, currently competing for playoff positioning, aim to enhance their defense after struggling recently. The Oilers also recently added center Trent Frederic from the Boston Bruins, reinforcing their lineup ahead of the postseason.
Sharks General Manager Mike Grier characterized this trade as a strategic move to secure valuable assets for the future. “It’s important for us to build a strong foundation,” he said. This deal allows the Sharks to accumulate two first-round picks in consecutive drafts, which Grier hopes will facilitate a more competitive roster moving forward.
Meanwhile, Carl Berglund, who has spent his time developing with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, now has a chance to advance in the Sharks’ organization. The 25-year-old forward posted 12 points during the current season, demonstrating potential for growth at the NHL level.
The Sharks will have to navigate filling the void left by Walman’s departure, as he was a key contributor on their blue line, especially becoming the fastest defenseman on the team to reach the 20-assist mark this season.
As the NHL trade deadline looms, the Oilers are hoping that Walman’s addition, along with previous trades, will ignite their performance and lead them back to championship contention.
Walman is expected to debut with the Oilers as soon as March 8 against the Dallas Stars at Rogers Place.
