OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Numerous schools across Oklahoma are either closing or transitioning to virtual learning on Thursday, Feb. 13, due to hazardous weather conditions, including freezing rain and ice. Major districts such as Oklahoma City Public Schools and Moore Public Schools have opted for remote education.
The decision follows a winter weather advisory issued for most of the state, which is expected to remain in effect until noon on Thursday. The advisory warns of icy roads and potential dangers for commuters.
“We’re monitoring the weather closely as conditions can change rapidly,” said Jonathan Conder, a meteorologist with KOCO 5. “Some parts of the state are already experiencing freezing rain, leading to slick roads and unsafe travel conditions.”
In the Oklahoma City metro, several districts confirmed closures including El Reno Public Schools, Millwood Public Schools, and Wellston Public Schools. Schools implementing virtual learning include Agra, Glencoe, and Okarche Public Schools, alongside Oklahoma City University and Terra Verde Discovery School.
As of Wednesday morning, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported 173 non-injury crashes, 21 injury crashes, and 45 motorist assists statewide related to the adverse weather conditions, with additional updates expected as the day progresses.
Temperatures are projected to drop into the teens later on Wednesday, significantly hindering any melting of the ice created by the freezing rain. “Even treated roads will remain slick due to the continued cold temperatures,” Conder added.
Students and parents are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts and school announcements through district websites and local news outlets. This situation is a reminder of the winter challenges Oklahomans face annually and the need for safety precautions while traveling.
