Baltimore Orioles Baseball Team Player Highlights

BALTIMORE, Md. — As the Baltimore Orioles kick off the 2025 MLB season, anticipation runs high following two successful years. The team entered the season bolstered by a core of home-grown talent but still seeks to translate regular-season success into postseason victories.

A major factor in the Orioles’ recent achievements has been their effective drafting and development of players, especially on offense. However, both playoff appearances in the last two seasons ended without a single postseason win. “We need to take the next step this year,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde.

Last season, the Orioles faced significant challenges when ace Corbin Burnes was sidelined by injuries and a late-season slump plagued their lineup. As the new season unfolds, fans hope that young talents continue to develop, particularly with standouts like Jackson Holliday showing promise. Recently labeled a breakout candidate, Holliday, a former first overall pick, has had a rocky start but appears to be finding his footing. In limited action in 2025, he’s posted a .316 batting average with one home run and two RBIs.

This season, the Orioles will also contend with the absence of star shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who left Norfolk en route to Baltimore on Thursday. After suffering an intercostal strain in February, Henderson’s return was anticipated eagerly due to his exceptional pre-injury performance. “Having Gunn back means our whole lineup improves,” Hyde noted. Henderson’s prowess before his injury had made him a key player, and his expected addition back to the lineup is seen as crucial for their ongoing success.

Despite the absence of key players, the Orioles’ offense is impressive; they rank first in MLB for team batting average after just five games. The anticipated return of Henderson, who posted two home runs in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk, could elevate the team further. However, the team is also monitoring the health of outfielder Colton Cowser, who fractured his left thumb during a recent game and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. Cowser had made a significant impact last season, ranking among the team’s best hitters.

The Orioles faced yet another injury setback with the news of reliever Andrew Kittredge starting the season on the injured list following a spring training setback. Despite this, Baltimore’s front office has worked proactively by acquiring Cody Poteet from the Miami Marlins to deepen their bullpen, showcasing their commitment to fortifying the roster as the season progresses.

As Baltimore prepares to navigate these early challenges with high aspirations, all eyes will be on Holliday, Henderson, and the other young talents poised to step up and lead the charge for postseason success. The Orioles, who have demonstrated resilience in previous years, will aim to maintain momentum and find a path to their first playoff victory in over three years.
