I owe the Brisbane Heat everything!’ Emotional Spencer Johnson credits T20 franchise
Emotional Spencer Johnson has expressed his deep gratitude towards the Brisbane Heat cricket team, acknowledging the T20 franchise as the reason behind resurrecting his cricket career. Johnson, who recently wrapped up an outstanding BBL13 campaign, attributed his success to the team, stating that they “changed his life” when he joined them just over a year ago.
The South Australian cricketer was relatively unknown before making his BBL debut for the Brisbane Heat in January last year. Battling injuries, Johnson was struggling to find his footing in the cricketing world until his phenomenal performance throughout the 2023 calendar year. His exceptional form led to a lucrative IPL contract, signing with the Gujarat Titans for a staggering A$1.78m – a deal that was nearly 20 times his base price.
During this time, Johnson also represented Australia in three international limited-overs matches, proving his mettle in The Hundred for the Oval Invincibles and showcasing his talents in three first-class matches for South Australia. In the latter format, he claimed 16 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, at an impressive average of 22.06.
Reflecting on his triumph as a BBL champion, Johnson struggled to find words to express his elation but managed to convey his feelings by saying, “You beauty.” However, he soon became emotional and added, “I owe the Brisbane Heat everything. Coming here last year, unsure of my future, and now winning the Big Bash with my closest mates – it’s pretty cool.”
Johnson went on to emphasize the life-altering impact of being a part of the Brisbane Heat, stating, “They have changed my life. It’s a truly special experience.”
Impressing throughout BBL13, Johnson finished the tournament with 19 wickets at an average of 14.47, showcasing his ability to control the run-rate with an impressive economy rate of 7.05. Observing his performance, Fox Cricket’s Mark Waugh expressed confidence in Johnson’s potential to represent Australia across all formats if he manages to stay injury-free.
In a touching gesture, immediately after Xavier Bartlett secured Brisbane’s 54-run victory by dismissing Steve O’Keefe, Johnson approached the Sixers veteran, who was playing his final BBL match, to offer his respect and appreciation. Johnson then joined his Brisbane teammates in celebrating their well-deserved victory.
The Brisbane Heat’s triumph in front of a captivated crowd of 43,153 in Sydney marked their second BBL title and their first in 11 years, overcoming their disappointment from last year’s final. Johnson expressed his belief that their long-standing dominance throughout the season made them deserving champions.
