Pacers Pull Off Stunning Comeback in NBA Finals Game 1

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tyrese Haliburton delivered another clutch performance as the Indiana Pacers overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-110 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 8, 2025. Haliburton’s game-winning jumper with just 0.3 seconds left capped off a thrilling comeback.
With under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Pacers struggled to apply defensive pressure according to assistant coach Jenny Boucek. Despite Indiana’s earlier woes, Andrew Nembhard led an aggressive defensive push, aiming to prevent Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from getting the ball.
The Pacers’ defense created chaos, particularly in the final moments when Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren attempted a finger roll, only to have it rebound into Pascal Siakam‘s hands. Indiana’s strategy of full-court pressure frustrated Oklahoma City and forced them into uncharacteristic mistakes.
“We want to make it hard,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “Each game in the series is going to look different.” Carlisle has relied on a deep bench to wear out opponents this playoff season, a tactic that has paid off in close games.
During Game 1, the Pacers executed what they call the “wear-down effect.” This strategy emphasizes high defensive pressure and fast-paced transition play, which they hope will tire their opponents over the course of the game. “It’s hard to play against us for 48 minutes,” T.J. McConnell added.
Despite their early struggles, the Pacers managed to keep pushing forward, showing mental resilience. Nembhard’s relentless defense on Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted Indiana’s tenacity, while Haliburton’s decisive shot served as the climax of their effort.
“We’re just mentally and physically conditioned,” Myles Turner said. “We expected to fight back.” Game 1 showcased the Pacers’ ability to adapt to adversity, with Haliburton proving once again he can deliver under pressure.
After the final buzzer, Gilgeous-Alexander, who led all scorers with 38 points, acknowledged the challenge posed by the Pacers’ aggressive play style. “They wear you down,” he explained. “It’s tough on you mentally.” Haliburton’s critical shot not only sealed the victory but exemplified the Pacers’ underdog determination in the playoffs.
