Packers Face Crucial Decisions Ahead of Free Agency

GREEN BAY, Wis. — As the NFL offseason approaches, the Green Bay Packers are tasked with major decisions regarding their roster, particularly regarding their 11 impending unrestricted free agents. General Manager Brian Gutekunst is facing crucial choices about re-signing key players, structuring contracts, and navigating the tricky waters of free agency.
The Packers’ most pressing need may be retaining kicker Brandon McManus, who stabilised a previously inconsistent position after his midseason acquisition. McManus showcased impressive performance, converting 50 of 51 field goal and extra point attempts during his tenure, including NFL playoff games. Gutekunst expressed optimism about McManus returning, stating, “If we were able to get Brandon back, I think that would certainly make me feel very good about that [specialist] group.”
However, the future of cornerback Jaire Alexander remains uncertain. The two-time All-Pro player, who is due $17.5 million next season, has battled persistent injuries, limiting him to just seven appearances in 2024. His frustration is palpable, as he declined to comment on his future during a recent press conference, expressing he had “nothing good to say.” The team currently stands to gain significant salary cap space should they choose to release him.
“I know it’s been really, really frustrating for not only him as a player, but us as a club,” Gutekunst commented. Alexander’s struggles have been magnified by his failure to consistently contribute on the field, even as he ranked second on the team in pass breakups.
The Packers are also weighing their options regarding other veterans, including offensive tackle who struggled to get on the field last season and may not fit into their future plans. Meanwhile, the future of fellow cornerback Eric Stokes, who failed to regain his form after multiple injuries, remains tenuous.
Decisions around re-signing backup players such as defensive backs Corey Ballentine and Robert Rochell could prove difficult as well, with all three players potentially receiving minimum contracts if re-signed. However, with their performance tied to special teams contribution, their future may be less certain.
Situated in a competitive division, the Packers must also consider long-term strategy in their decision-making. Drafting choices will be essential, particularly if they lose multiple cornerbacks to free agency. Possible targets include younger players like Paulson Adebo, who fits Gutekunst’s preference for developing, ascending talent over experienced veterans.
As the franchise navigates these decisions, the expectation is that they will focus on balancing immediate needs with future potential. Ultimately, the Packers’ approach to free agency this offseason will significantly impact their competitiveness heading into the 2025 NFL season.
