Paige Bueckers Anticipated as Top Pick in 2025 WNBA Draft

STORRS, Conn. — Paige Bueckers, the standout guard from the UConn women’s basketball team, is set to be a highlight of the 2025 WNBA Draft after leading her team to its 12th national title last week. Following her championship victory with the Huskies over the South Carolina Gamecocks, Bueckers has been making media rounds, including appearances on the “Today” show with Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist.
The excitement builds as Bueckers prepares for the draft, scheduled for April 14, 2025, where she is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Dallas Wings. This would place her among an elite group of UConn players who have previously led the draft: Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, and Breanna Stewart.
Bueckers, now 23, has made a remarkable comeback this season, averaging 19.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists while recovering from two serious knee injuries. “Coming back and winning the championship with my team is one of my greatest achievements,” Bueckers said. “I’m ready for the next challenge.”
Alongside Bueckers, several talented players will enter the league, including Dominique Malonga, a 19-year-old forward/center from France who averaged a double-double with Lyon ASVEL Feminin. Malonga expressed her unique advantage in the draft: “My versatility allows me to play both inside and outside, and contribute significantly on defense.”
Another notable prospect is Sonia Citron from Notre Dame, who concluded her career with impressive statistics, making her the only player in program history to total 1,700 points, 700 rebounds, and 300 assists. Citron commented on her journey: “I’m excited to bring my skills to the next level and represent Notre Dame proudly.”
Kiki Iriafen, a forward from USC, also stands out in this draft class. The Los Angeles native, who previously played at Stanford, returned home for her senior season and made significant contributions to the USC team, leading them to a Big Ten title. “This journey has prepared me for the professional stage,” Iriafen said.
The draft features numerous international players as well, including Justė Jocytė from Lithuania, who showcased her skills in France. “Playing in a competitive environment has strengthened my game and boosted my confidence,” Jocytė stated.
The 2025 WNBA Draft is generating considerable anticipation, with nearly 40 players eligible to be selected across three rounds. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN and will also be available for streaming on Fubo, which is offering a free trial for new users. Fans can expect coverage and analysis throughout the drafting process, especially for the top picks.
As the countdown to the draft continues, Bueckers stands as a transformative player, expected to significantly impact attendance and viewership for the Dallas Wings and the WNBA as a whole. With her abilities on the court, she has earned her recognition and is eager to step into the professional realm.
The draft order is set to be crucial as teams strategize on their selections on draft night. Will Bueckers fulfill the expectations set upon her? Only time will tell as the WNBA prepares for another exciting season ahead with new talent entering the league.
