Pakistani Cricketers Respond to Gavaskar on Asia Cup Remarks

Karachi, Pakistan — Pakistani cricket legends, including Javed Miandad and Basit Ali, have voiced their disappointment over former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar‘s recent remarks regarding Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup. Gavaskar suggested that current political tensions might prevent Pakistan from joining the tournament, which is co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Miandad, a World Cup winner, expressed disbelief at Gavaskar’s comments, emphasizing their long-standing camaraderie. “I can’t believe Sunny bhai said this,” Miandad said in an interview with Telecomasia.net. “He’s a respectful, down-to-earth person who always stayed away from politics.”
The remarks come in the wake of a deadly attack that left 26 tourists dead in Pahalgam, Kashmir. India has accused Pakistan of supporting terrorist activities, leading to escalated tensions. In response to the attack, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty and hinted at potential retaliatory actions.
Former spinner Iqbal Qasim also expressed surprise over Gavaskar’s statements, stating, “Politics should not mix with sports.” Qasim praised Gavaskar as a responsible figure who is loved on both sides of the border.
Ali took a firmer stance, labeling Gavaskar’s remarks as “stupid.” He called for evidence before making such accusations, saying, “Let the investigation conclude. Cricket should remain above political hostilities.”
Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s ODI captain, maintained a diplomatic approach. “Whatever happens politically, cricket should go on,” Rizwan remarked, underscoring the significance of maintaining sporting ties despite political issues.
The comments from these cricketing icons come as cricket fans await confirmation on whether Pakistan will participate in the Asia Cup amidst the ongoing tension between the two nations.
