Panthers Might Target Jets’ Jermaine Johnson Ahead of Trade Deadline

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the 2025 NFL trade deadline approaches, the Carolina Panthers are reportedly considering a significant move for New York Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson II. General manager Dan Morgan is evaluating options that could strengthen the team’s defense.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Jets are willing to entertain offers for Johnson, who has shown promise after recovering from a torn Achilles that sidelined him last year. Johnson has recorded 19 tackles, one sack, and 11 stops this season over five games.

Johnson’s previous performance during a healthy 2023 season solidified his reputation as a rising star in the league. He amassed 55 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, demonstrating his ability as a well-rounded edge rusher.

“If the Panthers want to transform their defense overnight, Johnson could be the key addition,” said an unnamed source familiar with the situation.

Currently, the Panthers sit at 5-4, while the Jets have struggled with a 1-7 record. The Jets are actively looking to sell players, making Johnson potentially available for a second-round pick in return.

The Panthers’ front seven, under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, is improving but lacks a proven veteran presence. Johnson could fill that role and enable younger players like Scourton to rush more aggressively.

Despite the potential for significant improvement through a trade, Morgan’s approach has been measured. He values high draft capital and is unlikely to make a whimsical move, especially if it jeopardizes Carolina’s long-term strategy.
