Panthers Sign Veteran Punter Sam Martin to One-Year Deal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have signed veteran punter Sam Martin to a one-year deal, the team announced on Tuesday. Martin, who turns 36 this season, previously played for the Buffalo Bills and averaged 46.7 yards per punt last year, marking a significant addition to the Panthers’ special teams unit.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the contract is worth up to $3 million. Martin’s impressive performance in 2024 included 25 punts inside the 20-yard line, demonstrating his ability to place the ball effectively within opposing territory.

Martin, an alumnus of Appalachian State University, was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He spent his first seven years in Detroit, where he averaged 46.0 yards per punt. Following his time with the Lions, he played two seasons with the Denver Broncos and three seasons with the Bills.

“Sam brings not only experience but also a proven track record on the field. We are excited to welcome him to our team,” a Panthers official stated. Martin’s career trajectory shows his capacity to contribute effectively in various roles on special teams, and his presence provides a fresh start for Carolina.

The Panthers are moving on from Johnny Hekker, a four-time All-Pro punter who has been with the team for the past three seasons. As the team’s incumbent punter, Hekker’s departure marks a significant change in the special teams lineup. With Hekker no longer in the mix, Carolina will adapt to collaborating with a new long snapper.

In 2024, Martin’s performance ranked 20th in the NFL for average yards per punt and 27th in net yardage at 40.2 yards. His ability to place 25 punts inside the 20-yard line ranked tied for 16th league-wide, showcasing his reliability during his last season in the NFL.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Panthers will focus on integrating Martin into their system while continuing to strengthen their roster through free agency. This signing comes at a crucial time for the team as they aim to enhance their competitiveness in the NFL.
