Pelicans Sign DeAndre Jordan Ahead of Home Opener Against Spurs
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The New Orleans Pelicans made a significant roster move ahead of their home opener, signing veteran center DeAndre Jordan to a one-year contract worth $3.6 million, ESPN reported on Friday.
Jordan, 37, joins the Pelicans after spending the last three seasons with the Denver Nuggets, where he played a part in their championship run last season. He averaged 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 points in 12.3 minutes per game during his time with Denver.
The decision to bring in Jordan comes as the Pelicans deal with injury concerns on their roster. Center Kevon Looney is currently sidelined, and Yves Missi‘s status is uncertain for the next game, making Jordan’s experience crucial at this time.
The Pelicans are looking to turn around a challenging season after finishing with a 21-61 record last year. Following a tough season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies, where they lost 128-122, the team is eager to energize their fan base with a strong performance against the San Antonio Spurs.
Forward Zion Williamson expressed optimism about the upcoming game, stating, “I definitely look forward to playing at the crib. I hope the city comes out and brings the energy, because we’re looking to put on a show and have fun.”
Pelicans’ new director of basketball operations Joe Dumars emphasized that the team must improve their performance, saying, “If we play as hard as we can play every night, we’re gonna get enough wins where we’re gonna be happy.”
The Pelicans’ successful season is not just about basketball; it also has implications for their future. Team governor Gayle Benson and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry are set to negotiate a long-term lease extension for the Smoothie King Center, which could include renovations and potentially hosting another NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans.
As the Pelicans aim to capture the attention of local sports fans in a tumultuous season for other teams, they see an opportunity to engage and create excitement. The stakes are high for Williamson and the Pelicans to deliver a successful season.
