Pennsylvania Urges Lyme Disease Prevention as Tick Season Arrives

Butler, Pennsylvania — As May marks Lyme Disease Prevention Month, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) encourages residents to take precautions against ticks as outdoor activities increase.
Lyme disease can result in flu-like symptoms, arthritis, and, in severe cases, heart complications. The DEP is sharing essential steps to stay safe this season.
“It’s vital to protect yourself while enjoying nature,” said a spokesperson from the DEP. “Simple actions like wearing long sleeves and applying insect repellent can significantly reduce your risk.”
With the arrival of warm weather, tick season is officially in full swing. Black-legged ticks, which are known carriers of Lyme disease, thrive in forested areas, tall grass, and even residential backyards.
Symptoms of Lyme disease can manifest anywhere from three to 30 days following a tick bite, and may include fever, fatigue, and a characteristic circular rash. If you experience any of these symptoms, health officials advise seeking medical attention promptly.
