Perth Wildcats Extend Winning Streak with Dominant Victory over South East Melbourne Phoenix
The Perth Wildcats showcased their championship potential once again as they triumphed over the South East Melbourne Phoenix with a convincing 100-79 victory. Returning to the RAC Arena for the first time in 2024, the Wildcats put on a spectacular display of skill and teamwork that thrilled the 12,859 fans in attendance.
Bryce Cotton continued his MVP-caliber performance, dominating the game with 34 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Cotton’s incredible form has been integral to the Wildcats’ success, and he is now a strong contender for his fourth MVP award. However, it was point guard Tai Webster who stepped up as a key asset for the team.
Webster, often underestimated by opposing teams, took advantage of the South East Melbourne defense’s decision to leave him open at the three-point line. While he missed a few attempts, Webster showcased his versatility with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting, along with four assists. His partnership with Cotton in the backcourt has proven to be a formidable combination, strengthening the Wildcats’ chances of another championship.
Webster welcomed the strategy of teams underestimating him, referring to it as “disrespect.” This approach allows him the freedom to make plays for his teammates, penetrate the defense, or take outside shots. Despite the tactic, Webster is a capable three-point shooter with a career average of 33% from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats’ overall performance has significantly improved throughout the season, and Webster attributes this to the team’s chemistry and collective effort to support Cotton. With four consecutive wins, the Wildcats remain in second place with a record of 13-7, firmly establishing themselves as championship contenders.
On the other hand, the South East Melbourne Phoenix struggled to keep up with the Wildcats’ offensive prowess. Despite captain Mitch Creek’s commendable efforts, finishing the game with 36 points and seven rebounds, the Phoenix lacked the necessary support to overcome Perth’s dominance. The team was still without import players Gary Browne and Abdel Nader, and their absence was keenly felt as they suffered their sixth loss in the last seven games.
South East Melbourne coach Mike Kelly praised his team’s resilience but acknowledged the challenge of closing the gap against a talented Perth squad. The Phoenix now sit outside the top six with a record of 9-12, necessitating a revival to secure a playoff berth.
