Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm Falls Short in Home Run Derby Semifinals
Philadelphia Phillies‘ third baseman, Alec Bohm, was eliminated from the 2024 Home Run Derby in the semifinals by Los Angeles Dodgers‘ outfielder, Teoscar Hernandez, after a close swing-off on Monday night. Bohm matched Hernandez’s 14 home runs in the semifinals but fell short in the tiebreaker, sending Hernandez to face Kansas City Royals‘ shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr., in the final round.
Bohm, who surprisingly entered the derby with the longest betting odds to win, led the pack in the first round with an impressive 21 homers, securing his spot as the top seed in the semifinals. Despite a valiant effort by Bohm in the swing-off, knocking one less than Hernandez, he ultimately bowed out of the competition.
Throughout the derby, Bohm received enthusiastic support from his Philadelphia Phillies teammates, with notable appearances from first baseman Bryce Harper who sported a water jug labeled “Wooder” to motivate Bohm during the event.
During the first round, Bohm’s longest home run traveled an impressive 445 feet, while his hardest-hit ball had an exit velocity of 105 mph. This performance was particularly impressive considering Bohm entered the derby with the least number of homers among all participants at 11.
Phillies manager, Joe Girardi, had expressed confidence in Bohm leading up to the derby, predicting a strong showing. Girardi’s faith was well-placed as Bohm’s exceptional performance in the event showcased his talent and power at the plate.
Following his Home Run Derby journey, Alec Bohm is set to represent the Philadelphia Phillies at the All-Star game alongside teammates Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. The trio will form part of the National League All-Star starting lineup, with the game marking a prestigious recognition of their contributions to the team.
After the All-Star break, the Philadelphia Phillies will resume their season as they face the Pittsburgh Pirates in an upcoming game, ready to carry the momentum from the derby into the second half of the season.
