Phillies Seek Resurgence Against Cubs Amid Struggling Performance

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Phillies enter a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on the heels of a tough stretch, having lost nine of their last ten games. Manager Rob Thomson emphasized the need for his team to keep preparing and competing without trying to do too much.
Closed-door team meetings often signify a team hit rock bottom, and while the Phillies haven’t held one yet, veterans in the clubhouse maintain open dialogues. A player commented, “There’s not really a team meeting aspect-wise; I think everything comes around naturally. Everyone talks to each other.” The need for communication remains vital as the team navigates its struggles.
Against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies only managed six runs over three games. The absence of a key player, who is currently on the injured list, contributed to their recent decline. In June alone, the team’s batting average plummeted to .181, with a slugging percentage of just .288.
Thomson acknowledged that players often try to push too hard during slumps. “Every team goes through something like this every year,” he said. “Just got to fight. The energy level is up, but frustration level is high too. We need to ride the wave.”
While the Phillies are currently 1-9 over their last ten games, Thomson offered perspective, noting, “Stretching it out to 15 games, we’re 5-10. Last year we had a 3-12 stretch. It proves we can get through this.”
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola has been sidelined since May 16 due to stiffness in his right side, which may be related to an illness. Thomson reported that Nola felt a bit better after seeing a doctor before the series opener. To accommodate Nola’s eventual return, reliever Daniel Robert was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
In further updates, outfield prospect Justin Crawford missed three games with a quadriceps strain. The organization remains optimistic about his recovery, and Thomson believes it should not be a lengthy absence. Meanwhile, Mick Abel is set to start for the Phillies against Cubs pitcher Colin Rea on Tuesday.
