Phoenix Suns Collin Gillespie Nba Debut

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Collin Gillespie made a significant step in his professional career by starting for the Phoenix Suns against the Toronto Raptors on March 17, 2025. The two-way point guard contributed three points, two rebounds, and two assists in 16 minutes during the Suns’ 129-89 victory.

Gillespie’s start came as both Bradley Beal (left hamstring strain) and Grayson Allen (left foot strain) were sidelined. Although Monte Morris was available, he was managing a lower back injury. Head coach Mike Budenholzer did not reveal Gillespie’s starting status prior to the game.

The moment marked Gillespie’s first NBA start after appearing in a career-best 10 consecutive games. During this stretch, he averaged 3.7 points, with a shooting percentage of 38.9% from beyond the arc, along with two rebounds and two assists in nearly ten minutes per game.

“It felt good to be out there contributing however I could,” said Gillespie after the game. “I just wanted to make the most of my opportunity.”

Prior to his NBA stint, Gillespie had an impressive run with the G League Valley Suns, where he averaged 21.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 10.6 assists per game. According to NBA rules, two-way players can remain active for a maximum of 50 games in a regular season. With this being his 20th game, Gillespie remains eligible to participate in the Suns’ remaining contests.

However, his recent contributions have been more modest. Players like Devin Booker understand the importance of maintaining team health as they gear up for the closing months of the regular season. “Next man up,” Booker remarked regarding Beal’s injury. “It’s an opportunity for other people, and we trust our training staff to manage our health.”

As of now, the Suns stand at 30-35, trailing behind the Dallas Mavericks in the race for the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. Their next challenge comes against the Houston Rockets, who boast a 40-25 record and currently hold the fifth seed.

With this pivotal stretch of the season underway, the Phoenix Suns will look to establish consistency as they juggle injuries and player health. Budenholzer’s strategies will be critical in maintaining their playoff aspirations.
