Pierce Brosnan Mobland Accent Controversy

LOS ANGELES, CA — Pierce Brosnan is defending his Irish accent in the new crime drama series, “MobLand,” after critics voiced their disapproval following its premiere. Commentators highlighted the actor’s portrayal of mob boss Conrad Harrigan as a notable distraction due to what they described as a “mangled” accent.

The Irish Times labeled his vocal performance a “horror for the ages,” reflecting the negative response from many viewers. Brosnan, born in Drogheda, County Louth, has spent significant time in England and the United States, leading some to question his authenticity in portraying an Irish character.

In an interview, Brosnan addressed the backlash, stating that the accent of his character is different from his own. “My own accent is very soft … Conrad’s accent is a million miles away from me,” he explained. Brosnan sought the help of a dialect coach to refine his portrayal. “I told him that I needed a Kerry accent. So he gave me the name of a man, and I Googled the guy and that was it,” he added.

Despite the criticism, some voices have come to his defense. Irish GQ writer Ben Allen commented that critics may be “a little harsh” and noted that Brosnan is “largely pulling off what seems to be a semi-thick Kerry accent.”

The series, directed by Guy Ritchie, also stars Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren, and follows the turmoil within competing crime families. Brosnan remarked on the challenge of adopting a realistic Irish accent, acknowledging the diversity of dialects in Ireland.

As the first season of “MobLand” nears its finale on June 1, Brosnan remains optimistic about his performance in the series. He expressed confidence that his efforts to embrace his roots would be appreciated.
