Pirates Defeat Angels 3-0 in Strong Performance

ANAHEIM, California — The Pittsburgh Pirates won against the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 at Angel Stadium on April 23, 2025. Left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney delivered an outstanding performance, striking out nine batters and allowing only one hit over six innings.
Heaney’s strong outing marked a significant achievement; he became the first Pirates left-hander since Francisco Liriano in 2013 to strike out the first six batters of the game. Heaney’s success mainly resulted from his ability to control the strike zone, throwing 95 pitches with 10 strikes in a clean performance.
On the offensive side, the Pirates started strong with a home run by Oneil Cruz, who sent one 463 feet with a 116.6 mph exit velocity—ranking as the fourth longest home run in the majors this season.
The Pirates’ scoring continued as Adam Frazier swiped second base and a critical single by Tommy Pham drove in Frazier for a run in the eighth inning. The Pirates tallied 11 hits overall, though they struggled with runners in scoring position, finishing 0-for-5.
Jack Kochanowicz, the Angels’ pitcher, struggled through six innings as well, giving up two earned runs and striking out three batters. His final line read: six innings pitched, eight hits allowed.
The final frames saw Ryan Borucki and Caleb Ferguson secure the lead for the Pirates late in the game, maintaining the shutout.
The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with 31,256 fans in attendance, marking a solid turnout despite the Angels’ disappointing performance.
As the game concluded, the Pirates celebrated their victory and continued to gain momentum in the 2025 season.
