Pistons’ Remarkable Turnaround Sparks Playoff Hopes Against Knicks

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Pistons are poised to make a significant mark in the upcoming playoff series against the New York Knicks after experiencing a dramatic turnaround this season. Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who took the helm in July, recognized the potential within the roster even before the season began.
“You have an idea and you can watch film, but until you’re with people every single day, you don’t know the reality of their skillset,” Bickerstaff said in an interview, reflecting on the insights gained during training camp. His confidence stemmed from the blend of talent and numerous draft picks the franchise amassed, suggesting a foundation for success.
As the season progressed, Bickerstaff observed positive developments, notably in late-game scenarios. The mix of youthful energy and seasoned veterans fostered a productive environment. Early victories, such as a road win against Indiana and a triumph at Madison Square Garden against New York, hinted at the team’s potential. However, despite an early 10-16 record, a remarkable shift occurred with the Pistons winning 11 of their next 14 games, including an impressive eight-game winning streak in February.
Detroit’s turnaround from a disappointing 14-win season to a 44-38 record illustrates a historic 30-game improvement, marking the franchise as the first in NBA history to triple its win total in successive seasons. Last year, the team ranked 27th offensively and 25th defensively; this season, they sit at 14th and 10th, respectively.
Successful rebuilding hinges on patience and capable leadership. General Manager Trajan Langdon, appointed in May, has been pivotal in this transformation by hiring Bickerstaff and recruiting experienced players such as Malik Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr. His predecessor, Troy Weaver, played a crucial role in drafting key players, including Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson.
Bickerstaff has emerged as a strong candidate for Coach of the Year, while Cunningham, who is a frontrunner for All-NBA honors, has been a standout performer, averaging a career-best 26.1 points and 9.1 assists per game this season. Cunningham’s growth emphasizes his ability to elevate game situations, balancing personal scoring while enabling teammates effectively. Bickerstaff praised Cunningham’s leadership skills, stating, “He’s just an unbelievable person, leader, teammate, all those things.”
This playoff run marks Detroit’s first since 2019 and only the third in the last 16 seasons. Facing a Knicks team with formidable expectations, the Pistons hold a 3-1 advantage over them from the regular season, having achieved victories, including two on their home turf.
Cunningham reflected on Bickerstaff’s impact, noting, “He did a lot of things right. One, being honest in how he saw us playing and just building relationships with each individual on the team. That made everyone want to play hard for him, and that’s something we’ve all bonded over.”
As the team prepares for their playoff challenge, Bickerstaff remains focused yet excited. “We’re in study mode right now,” he said, emphasizing the importance of preparation as the playoffs loom. He is confident in his players’ engagement and resilience, stating, “Win or lose, our guys are going to show up and they’re going to fight.”
Regardless of the playoff outcome, Bickerstaff is optimistic about the future. “You maximize the opportunity and the potential that’s in front of you,” he reiterated. The team has laid a firm foundation for continued growth, promising an exciting trajectory ahead as their young talent develops further.
