PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned closer David Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis in a surprising move following a series of poor performances to start the 2025 season. Bednar, who was once regarded as one of the most dominant closers in Major League Baseball, struggled considerably, prompting the team to elevate pitching prospect Thomas Harrington to the active roster.

Bednar’s recent challenges have been stark. After garnering attention as a two-time National League All-Star from 2022 to 2023, Bednar saw his performance decline substantially in 2024, finishing the season with a 5.77 earned run average and losing his closer role toward the end of the year. He allowed seven blown saves throughout the season, a statistic that underscored his waning effectiveness.

To start the current season, Bednar’s struggles continued. He accumulated a staggering 27.00 ERA through three games, recording one save with two losses and failing to deliver in high-pressure moments. On Opening Day against the Miami Marlins, Bednar allowed a walk-off single, and later, in the Pirates’ second game of the season, he surrendered a two-run home run while managing to secure a save in their only win.

“The confidence and command we saw just two years ago have evaporated,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “We believe that a stint in the minors will help David rediscover his rhythm and regain his form.”

Bednar’s descent was surprising given his previous success. From 2021 to 2023, he boasted a 2.25 ERA in 172 games, with a peak of 39 saves in the 2023 season alone. This notable production was particularly meaningful as Bednar, a Pittsburgh native, became a local hero after joining the Pirates in a trade from the San Diego Padres.

Alongside Bednar’s demotion, catcher Jason Delay was also designated for assignment to create space on the roster. Delay played 134 games over the last three seasons with a .231 batting average and had recently been optioned to Triple-A before Tuesday’s announcement.

Replacing Bednar on the active roster is Harrington, who was selected 36th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. Harrington, 23, showcased promise last season with a 2.24 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 68.1 innings at Double-A Altoona before making eight starts at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he went 5-1 with a 3.33 ERA.

The Pirates, currently with a record of 1-4, continue their series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. Players and fans alike hope that this latest roster adjustment helps reinvigorate the team and turn their season around.
