Prabal Gurung Fashion Memoir Walk Like A Girl

NEW YORK, NY — Designer Prabal Gurung reflects on his ambitious career in his new memoir, Walk Like a Girl, set to publish in May. The memoir covers his journey from Kathmandu to becoming a celebrated fashion designer in America. Gurung recounts his dreams, including dressing notable figures like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.

Gurung, known for his bold designs influenced by his South Asian heritage and philanthropic efforts, has achieved many of his aspirations. However, the memoir also delves into difficult topics, including the sexual abuse he experienced while growing up in Nepal. He emphasizes the importance of sharing his story: “I can’t be the victim of it, nor can I be captured by what happened in my past,” he said.

The title of the memoir is a testament to Gurung’s resilience against bullying during his school years. He aims to engage readers in “difficult conversations” with grace. Throughout writing the book, he touched on the support he received from his family and friends, which has helped him navigate the challenges of the fashion industry.

Gurung recalls the struggles he faced after launching his brand in 2009, including overcoming a million dollars in debt. Despite the unforgiving nature of the fashion world, he credits his success to the friendships and loyalty within the industry. “You need people who believe in you, believe in your dreams,” he noted.

Alongside Gurung’s struggles, his family’s unwavering support serves as a reassuring presence throughout the narrative. His siblings and mother have played an influential role in his life, helping him find his footing while he pursued his dreams.
