Predators Scratch Gus Nyquist Ahead of Trade Deadline

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With the NHL trade deadline approaching, the Nashville Predators have decided to scratch forward Gustav Nyquist from their lineup for health reasons during their game against the New York Islanders on March 1, 2025. Sources indicate this decision comes as the team seeks to protect Nyquist’s health amid ongoing trade discussions.
Nyquist, 35, is in the final year of a two-year, $6.37 million contract signed in 2023. The Predators have struggled this season, currently holding a record of 21-30-7, placing them near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. As they turn their focus toward rebuilding for the future, Nyquist has emerged as a prime trade asset despite his underwhelming performance this year.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Minnesota Wild are among the top contenders interested in Nyquist, who had a breakout season last year, achieving career highs with 23 goals and 75 points in 81 games. Although this season has seen a decline in his production—scoring only nine goals and 21 points in 57 games—his ability to perform as a top-to-middle six winger and his strong possession stats with a Corsi For percentage of 56.4% make him an appealing target for teams looking to bolster their playoff rosters.
Friedman noted, “This effort to keep Nyquist healthy for a potential trade is part of a growing trend in the NHL. Teams understand the importance of maintaining their movable assets as the deadline nears.” He added that the Predators are not just focusing on Nyquist but may also find themselves parting ways with other players in the coming days if the right offers surface.
As Nyquist sits out, speculation continues about potential trade partners. The Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning are also rumored to be interested in acquiring the veteran forward. The Predators’ general manager has implied that he is open to making significant changes to the roster, stating, “If you’re in, that’s great, and if not, then let me know, and I’ll make a move.”
In his lengthy NHL career spanning 841 games with the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, and Predators, Nyquist has racked up a total of 207 goals and 317 assists, tallying 524 points. His experience and playoff potential position him as a valuable addition to any contending team.
As the Predators prepare for their game against the Islanders, they look to navigate their roster’s future strategically, with Nyquist at the center of discussions as the trade deadline looms.
