Pregnancy-Related Hypertension Warned by Experts as Health Risk

New Delhi, India – Expecting mothers need to manage their blood pressure carefully during pregnancy, as suggested by health experts. Hypertension is a significant concern that can lead to complications for both the mother and unborn child.
Dr. Sonu Taxak, Director and Senior IVF Consultant at Yellow Fertility, stated, “Pregnancy brings joy, but it can also cause serious cardiovascular issues. High blood pressure during this time can lead to complications, yet it is preventable and treatable.” According to Dr. Taxak, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) affects about 5-10% of pregnant women.
High blood pressure can escalate in severity over time. For instance, it can lead to acute complications such as strokes or organ damage during pregnancy and increase the risk of long-term heart disease for the mother. “While many women recover quickly after childbirth, they remain vulnerable to cardiovascular issues without proper follow-up care,” Dr. Taxak added.
For infants, high blood pressure may restrict blood flow to the placenta, resulting in growth issues or preterm birth. Dr. Taxak emphasized the importance of early detection and management: “In severe cases, complications can endanger both mother and baby.”
Identifying risk factors is crucial. First-time mothers, those over 35, women carrying multiples, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes or obesity are at higher risk. Symptoms of high blood pressure should never be dismissed as typical pregnancy discomforts.
Experts recommend monitoring blood pressure at every prenatal visit and maintaining vigilance even postpartum. Lifestyle changes can significantly help in managing blood pressure and protecting heart health during and after pregnancy.
