Pro Wrestling Loses Legendary Announcer Bob Caudle at 95
Charlotte, North Carolina – Pro wrestling is mourning the loss of Bob Caudle, a legendary announcer known for his work with Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and WCW. Caudle passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 95, his son confirmed on Sunday morning.
Mike Caudle shared the news in a heartfelt message, saying, “It is with a very sad heart that I report that Bob Caudle has passed away. He was 95 years old. Our thoughts, prayers, and love go out to his family.” More details are expected to follow.
Born in Charlotte, Caudle began his broadcasting career in Wilmington before moving to Savannah, Georgia. There, he hosted a televised wrestling show in the late 1950s, leading him to work with Jim Crockett Sr. at Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling.
In the 1970s and ‘80s, he became the defining voice for Jim Crockett Promotions. Caudle handled play-by-play commentary for shows like Wide World Wrestling and Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, establishing a reputation for credibility and professionalism.
Even after Crockett Promotions transitioned to WCW under Ted Turner, Caudle remained a staple on WCW programs, including events like Starrcade and Clash of the Champions. His steady, no-frills commentary style allowed the wrestlers to shine, which endeared him to fans and colleagues alike.
Throughout his career, Caudle shared the microphone with wrestling legends such as Gordon Solie, Tony Schiavone, and Jim Ross. He also worked as the lead announcer for Smoky Mountain Wrestling in the 1990s.
Beyond wrestling, Caudle served as a legislative assistant for Senator Jesse Helms until 1996, showcasing his versatility outside the ring. He is survived by his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren.
Wrestling icons like Ric Flair have paid tribute to Caudle, reflecting on his significant influence in their careers. Flair remembered Caudle as a mentor, saying, “Bob Caudle was a great friend, and someone who helped me develop my interview skills.” Flair added that Caudle would be remembered as one of the greatest announcers of all time.
