Queensland Maroons Rally in Thrilling Origin II Against NSW Blues

PERTH, Australia — The Queensland Maroons battled back heroically in Game II of the State of Origin series on Wednesday night at Optus Stadium, edging out the New South Wales Blues 24-20.
After a shaky start with the Blues scoring early through Brian To’o, Queensland, led by new captain Cameron Munster, mounted a comeback. The Maroons’ persistence paid off as Munster scored the first of two tries, followed by an impressive conversion from Valentine Holmes, leveling the score at 6-6.
Queensland’s Harry Grant showcased his agility from dummy-half, facilitating a quick attack that saw Munster crash over the line for their first try, putting the Maroons ahead 12-6. Holmes then converted to improve the lead to eight points just before halftime.
Despite challenging conditions, with rain slicking the field, both teams displayed intensity and aggression. NSW struggled with handling issues, and Queensland’s defensive pressure forced multiple errors. Notably, Nathan Cleary’s kicking game was hampered, as mentioned before the match.
The second half saw NSW’s Zac Lomax and Jarome Luai both put on report for foul play, escalating the game’s already high tensions. Queensland continued their resilient performance, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow making a spectacular try in the corner, extending their lead to 18-6.
NSW, determined to respond, saw their resilience rewarded as they rallied back to score with Cleary finding Liam Martin for an 18-12 scoreline. However, Queensland quickly answered with another try from Munster, putting them back in control at 24-12.
In the final minutes, NSW mounted a valiant effort, narrowing the gap thanks to another try. Yet, they were unable to close the score enough to regain control, with the final whistle sealing a tense victory for Queensland.
Both teams demonstrated their skill and will, setting the stage for an exciting decider in July.
