Rafael Devers Remains Red Sox Designated Hitter Amid Position Changes

BOSTON — Rafael Devers will stay as the designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox this season, despite ongoing discussions about his position within the team. Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed on Saturday that Devers would not be returning to third base, where he has struggled defensively.
“We talk, but he’s my DH,” Cora stated, emphasizing the team’s confidence in Devers’ offensive contributions. Devers has not played a single inning in the field this season, maintaining focus solely on his hitting.
Devers has had a challenging season transition since being asked to move from third base to first base following Triston Casas’ knee injury in early May. With the arrival of Alex Bregman, there were discussions about moving Devers back to third, but those have been put to rest.
Despite the changes, Devers remains a significant offensive asset. He has recorded a .275 batting average with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs this season. Although the Red Sox have replaced him defensively, his performance underscores his value to the team.
<p“Devers understands that we are all in the winning business,” Cora added, reassuring that the organization remains focused on their performance rather than solely on defensive metrics.
Devers has also revisited infield drills recently, a sign of recovery from previous concerns regarding his fitness. “It’s part of his conditioning program,” said Cora. “Now that he’s feeling good, he’s out there taking grounders.”
While Devers fights for a solid playing role, his adaptation to his designated hitter position has been imperative for the Boston lineup. He leads the American League with 54 walks and is poised for a productive season ahead.
