TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays are set to promote outfielder Chandler Simpson, a rising star in their system known for his exceptional speed. The promotion comes in light of another injury setback for outfielder Eloy Jimenez, who is expected to be placed on the injured list due to a knee issue.

Simpson, 24, a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2022 draft, has showcased his impressive base-stealing ability in the minor leagues. In the 2023 season, he stole 81 bases, a remarkable feat in just 91 games, and previously swiped 104 bases in 110 games during his first professional season. His keen instincts on the basepaths have drawn comparisons to some of baseball’s most skilled speedsters.

As of early April 2025, Simpson has already accumulated eight stolen bases this season, showcasing his continued prowess. His performance at the plate features a .324 batting average and a .389 on-base percentage, with a well-balanced slash line of .324/.389/.371. Critics point out that while Simpson has limited power, hitting just one home run in his minor league career, his walk rate of 9.6% compared to a strikeout rate of 8.8% demonstrates his ability to get on base consistently.

“The organization has high hopes for Chandler,” said Rays general manager Erik Neander. “His combination of speed and on-base skills could provide a significant boost to our lineup.”

However, Simpson’s promotion will necessitate a corresponding move as he is not currently on the Rays’ 40-man roster, indicating an inopportune transition with Jimenez’s injury looming.

In a recent game against the Buffalo Bisons, Simpson recorded three hits, drove in two runs, and added to his steal tally, contributing to the game despite the Bulls falling short with an 8-5 loss. “It’s a tough loss, but I just focus on contributing any way I can,” Simpson said after the game. “Every opportunity counts.”

The Rays have a track record of developing speedsters, yet Simpson’s potential as a different kind of player could set him apart. If he can continue to reach base consistently, he may help break the trend that has seen many recent speed specialists struggle to maintain their hitting effectiveness.

As the Rays navigate the complexity of managing their roster, Simpson’s continued success could keep fans optimistic about the team’s prospects in the coming months.
