Real Madrid Edge Getafe 1-0 in Tense La Liga Clash

GETAFE, Spain – Real Madrid secured a vital 1-0 victory over Getafe on April 23, 2025, keeping their hopes of a La Liga title alive. The match, held at the Estadio Coliseum, was marked by a late flurry of chances from both sides, but Madrid held on for the win.
Arda Guler scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute, firing a powerful shot past Getafe goalkeeper David Soria. Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti made six changes to the lineup, resting key players ahead of a crucial Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona scheduled for this weekend.
Madrid started the game strong, with an early chance denied by Soria after a close-range shot. Getafe appeared determined to upset their illustrious opponents. However, although they created some promising opportunities, they could not find the back of the net.
“We knew it would be a tough match,” Guler said after the game. “Getafe always fight hard, and we needed this win to stay close to Barcelona.”
In the second half, Getafe sought to equalize but missed several key opportunities, including a near-miss from Alvaro Rodriguez who hit the crossbar with a header. The pressure intensified as Getafe continued to press for a goal, but Thibaut Courtois came up with a remarkable save in injury time, denying Alvaro Rodriguez from scoring a last-gasp equalizer.
The victory keeps Real Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona, who have 76 points as they head into the final stretch of the season. With five league matches remaining, each game will be crucial in determining the title race.
Getafe, currently sitting 12th in the league standings, struggled to find their footing against a Madrid team that continues to battle for domestic supremacy. Following the match, Getafe’s manager Jose Bordalás expressed his disappointment, noting that they need to capitalize on their chances in the upcoming matches.
“We have to do better in front of goal,” Bordalás said. “We had our chances, but we must convert them if we want to climb the table.”
