Copa Del Rey Final Match Injury

Sevilla, SpainReal Madrid‘s hopes in the 2025 Copa del Rey final were dealt a major blow when defender Ferland Mendy suffered an injury just eight minutes into the match against FC Barcelona on Saturday. Mendy, returning from a left hamstring injury that kept him out for over a month, collided with teammate Jules Koundé, which led to a muscular injury in his right adductor.

The 29-year-old Frenchman had been out since mid-May and was expected to fortify Madrid’s defense in the critical match at La Cartuja. He was replaced by Fran García shortly after his injury, raising concerns about the team’s depth and fitness in a season plagued by physical challenges.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had hoped that Mendy’s return would stabilize the back line, which has been vulnerable this season. Mendy has played 31 matches this season and has struggled with injuries that have hindered his participation.

As the game unfolded, FC Barcelona capitalized on their opponent’s misfortune. Thibaut Courtois, the Madrid goalkeeper, initially kept the score even against a commanding Barca offense, which struggled to break through. However, in the 28th minute, a critical play began when Pau Cubarsí intercepted a pass from Jude Bellingham. The ball found its way to Pedri, who orchestrated the attack.

Young phenom Lamine Yamal received a precise pass from Pedri and, after skillfully navigating through defenders, assisted the midfield maestro, who launched a shot to score in the top corner, marking the game’s first goal.

This season, Pedri has excelled, logging 52 appearances and netting six goals, showcasing his development as a key player for Barcelona, while Madrid’s injury woes continue to challenge their title aspirations.
