ABC‘s long-running variety show, ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ (DWTS), has hit a milestone by revealing the highest number of fan votes ever recorded for a single episode since its launch in 2005. The episode in question, which resulted in the eliminations of contestants identified as a ‘fashionista’ and a ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ star, amassed over 14 million votes. ABC previously maintained the secrecy of its voting figures but disclosed this unprecedented record last week.

Executive Producer Conrad Green emphasized the show’s sustained engagement, noting that fan participation through voting—either online or by text—plays a significant role in the show’s popularity. “Viewers can vote multiple times”, Green explained to Deadline, highlighting the passionate fanbase. “A lot of our audience are very passionate about a lot of our stars this year,” he added.

The series’ audience numbers continue to grow, with the season 33 premiere attracting 7.32 million total viewers, an increase of 47% over an initial live viewing. This success is echoed in the show’s performance in key demographics, specifically adults aged 18-49. The DWTS ratings in this group rose by 79%, consolidating its dominance in live-viewed reality television programming.

A notable aspect of the show’s appeal is its diverse cast, featuring Olympic athletes, reality TV personalities, and professional athletes among others. “This group of stars are really likable and talented,” Green opined, suggesting that viewers are drawn to the potential development of relationships and performances throughout the season.

Moreover, Green highlighted DWTS’s role as a source of upliftment during challenging times. “There’s a certain escapism and sense of community that comes with watching,” he stated, pointing out the increase in viewership from younger generations who are discovering the show through social media platforms like TikTok.

DWTS, created by BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions, continues to film in front of a live audience and returned with its ‘Soul Train Night’ special, featuring no eliminations. The event included actress Rosie Perez, known for her early dancing stint on ‘Soul Train’, as a guest judge.
