Red Dead Redemption 2 Becomes Fourth Best-Selling Video Game Ever
LOS ANGELES, CA — Rockstar Games announced that its 2018 title, Red Dead Redemption 2, has officially become the fourth best-selling video game of all time. The announcement came on November 6, with sales exceeding 79 million units globally.
This remarkable achievement also marks Red Dead Redemption 2 as the best-selling game in the U.S. over the past seven years based on dollar sales. With total sales from the Red Dead Redemption franchise reaching 106 million, the game surpasses Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8, which has sold approximately 78 million copies to date.
The all-time sales leaderboard features Minecraft at the top with 350 million copies sold, followed by Grand Theft Auto V with 220 million and Wii Sports at 82.9 million. Red Dead Redemption 2 has now edged out popular titles like Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow (75 million), The Last of Us Part II (65 million), and Super Mario Bros. (58 million).
Despite its success, there has been no official announcement for a sequel. Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, expressed mixed feelings about the future of the franchise. “Letting go of something I worked on for like 20-odd years is a big change,” he said. He acknowledged that continuing the Red Dead arc might be more challenging due to its cohesive storytelling.
Roger Clark, the voice of Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, shared his optimism for a future installment. “I’m certain we will see Red Redemption 3 one day,” he said. However, he added that fans should not expect Arthur Morgan to return, as his story has been told.
Many fans are hopeful that another Red Dead title will eventually materialize, but no specific timeline has been provided. Houser’s departure from Rockstar has left some uncertainty about future developments in the franchise.
