Red Sox Aim for Fifth Straight Win Against Struggling White Sox

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox are set to face the Chicago White Sox today at 1:35 p.m. at Fenway Park, hoping to extend their winning streak to five games after a tough stretch earlier this month. The Red Sox, who have gone 4-0 following a disheartening series loss against the White Sox, will send pitcher Tanner Houck to the mound for the match.
After dropping three out of four games, including a humiliating 16-1 defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox appear to be finding their rhythm. They secured victory over the White Sox (4-16) in their last two encounters, winning 10-3 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday, with Triston Casas delivering the decisive hit in extra innings.
“It was a tough at-bat going in. I didn’t know what to look for,” Casas said after Saturday’s win. “It was a big day overall.” Meanwhile, the White Sox will counter with Sean Burke, who makes his first appearance at Fenway Park against his hometown team. Burke has struggled this season, holding a 1-3 record with a 7.56 ERA.
Statistics show that Houck’s prior outing was one of the worst in Red Sox history, as he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) over just 2 ⅓ innings. Despite these struggles, pitching coach Andrew Bailey expressed confidence in Houck’s ability to improve. “Location leverage is key in this game. We have to generate swing-and-miss when we’re in an advantage count,” Bailey said.
As the White Sox enter Sunday’s matchup on a six-game losing streak, they haven’t scored more than three runs during this stretch. Chicago struggled particularly with runners in scoring position, finishing 1-for-10 on Saturday. General Manager Chris Getz emphasized the importance of evaluating success beyond immediate results. “We have to evaluate our success in different ways,” said Getz. “It’s a process.”
The White Sox’s rebuilding efforts are evident, as they rely heavily on young talents like Chase Meidroth, who has a .409 on-base percentage in his first six MLB games. Meidroth was acquired in a December trade with the Red Sox that included Garrett Crochet.
Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers has also provided hope for the team’s future, showcasing his experience with postseason play. “There are a lot of new players. We need to get to know each other. We’re getting there,” Devers stated. Meanwhile, manager Alex Cora has encouraged his players to trust in one another as they continue to develop team chemistry.
Today’s matchup will also mark the Red Sox’s continued struggles with errors, having the most in the MLB with 20. However, they showcased a strong performance in their last two games against Tampa Bay, committing no errors.
As the Red Sox strive for a fifth consecutive victory, all eyes will be on Houck to see if he can bounce back and deliver a worthy performance. First pitch for today’s game is set for 1:35 p.m. and can be viewed on NESN or heard on WEEI-FM 93.7.
