Red Sox Manager Discusses Inconsistencies in Player Performance

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are focusing on improving player performance as the season progresses. First baseman Triston Casas has struggled both offensively and defensively this season, posting a .158 batting average and negative defensive metrics.
In 21 games, the 25-year-old has a .229 on-base percentage, a .237 slugging percentage, and has accumulated only one home run and four RBIs. Additionally, he has negative-2 defensive runs saved in 174 innings at first base, ranking in the 13th percentile for range and outs above average.
“Inconsistent,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said about Casas’ defense on Tuesday. “There are a few things that we’re working on with him and we believe he can be much better.”
Casas has made 19 starts at first base, committing two errors. Cora emphasized the need to improve Casas’ pre-pitch routine and fix bad habits that have emerged. “If we can get that one down, he’ll be better,” Cora added.
In related news, right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Worcester after a rough outing against the Chicago White Sox. Kelly entered the game with a two-run lead but failed to record an out, leading to the team’s decision to send him down.
“We told him let’s turn the page on the last one,” Cora said regarding Kelly’s struggles, emphasizing the need for consistency.
Kelly, who had a 9.00 ERA over seven outings, will work on refining his pitching repertoire. Cora noted that using fewer pitches could help Kelly focus better in high-pressure situations.
Meanwhile, Brayan Bello has been activated from the injured list and will start against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park. Cora expressed confidence in Bello and the need for all players to execute effectively.
Kutter Crawford, recovering from injury, threw a bullpen session and is expected to join the team in Fort Myers, Florida to face hitters. Cora highlighted the importance of getting Crawford back into the swing of things as the team embarks on a six-game road trip.
In injury updates, Lucas Giolito is nearing a return after a minor league rehab stint, while the team remains cautious with recently returned Liam Hendriks. “We have to be smart about how we use him,” Cora remarked about Hendriks’ return after a lengthy absence.
The Red Sox aim to address these performance issues as they continue their season, with Cora committed to helping players like Casas reach their full potential.
