Red Sox Prospect Marcelo Mayer Poised for Major League Call-Up

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox may soon call up their promising prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A Worcester as the team navigates injury challenges in its infield. Mayer, a highly regarded shortstop, shared that he thinks about the possibility of reaching the big leagues every day.
“As a player, that’s something that I’ve thought about every single day since I was a little kid watching games on the television with my family,” Mayer said earlier this week. “It’s just something that you work so hard for every single day, and you just hope that one day it’s going to come true.”
With first baseman Triston Casas sidelined due to a season-ending injury sustained on May 2, the Red Sox are currently utilizing Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro to fill the gap at first base. However, they have also begun testing Kristian Campbell at the position, which opens the door for Mayer’s anticipated debut.
Though Mayer is accustomed to playing shortstop, many believe he possesses the defensive skills necessary to transition to second base if needed. The Red Sox’s decision to try Campbell at first enables Mayer to step into a role that better fits his strengths.
At Triple-A Worcester, Mayer is performing well, boasting a .265 batting average with eight home runs and 41 RBIs in just 42 games this season. His combination of defensive prowess and strong offensive numbers has drawn attention.
“He makes those plays deep in the hole and makes it look so easy. This guy is defensively ready to do a lot of great things in the big leagues,” WooSox hitting coach Doug Clark said. “At that age, it’s really special for us to see someone with that kind of talent.”
As the Red Sox explore changes and look for solutions due to injuries, Mayer stands as a viable option to further strengthen their infield. Fans and team members alike are eager to see if Mayer will soon realize his dream of playing at the major league level.
