JJ Redick’s Coaching Debut at the Los Angeles Lakers: Expectations and Early Impressions

Los Angeles Lakers 2024 Preseason

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ hiring of renowned NBA sharpshooter JJ Redick as their head coach marks a strategic move for the team’s present and future aspirations. With a roster blending youth and veteran leadership, Redick’s role was centered on maximizing the potential during LeBron James and Anthony Davis‘ tenure. Lakers President Jeanie Buss and General Manager Rob Pelinka reportedly have high hopes for Redick’s impact on the franchise, envisaging a successful future under his guidance.

An example of this new direction was evident during the Lakers’ 2024 preseason debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite a 124-107 loss, rookie Dalton Knecht stood out, scoring a team-high 16 points while achieving an efficient shooting percentage of 53.8%. Knecht, a 6-foot-6 former All-American from the University of Tennessee, impressed on both ends of the floor, particularly defensively, which earned praise from Redick.

“He really competed on the defensive end,” Redick commented, emphasizing the significance of defensive hustle for Knecht’s playing time. “And I talked with him about this, that’s all I’m asking him to do. If he’s gonna play on this team and play minutes and be in the rotation this year, he knows this, he’s gotta compete defensively.” The emphasis on defense addresses a long-standing issue for the Lakers, as Anthony Davis, an All-Defensive Team center, has often been burdened with covering defensive lapses at the rim.

The Lakers’ decision to select Knecht with the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft was notably celebrated, with the player widely regarded as a draft steal. Knecht, a seasoned rookie at 23 years old and SEC Player of the Year, was anticipated to contribute immediately. According to NBA general manager surveys, Knecht was recognized among the league’s biggest draft steals, highlighting league-wide acknowledgment of the Lakers’ savvy acquisition.

Knecht is set to benefit from playing alongside established superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, which may ease his transition into the NBA. Building trust with such veteran stars is crucial, and early indications from James are promising. LeBron James described Knecht as “a pro” and assuredly “ready to go now,” underscoring the rookie’s readiness and potential value to the team.
