Reed Garrett Emerges as Crucial Reliever for Mets in 2024 Playoffs
Reed Garrett, a reliever for the New York Mets, has unexpectedly become a pivotal component of the team’s success in the 2024 playoffs. Despite being part of the previous regime under Billy Eppler, Garrett has flourished under the new leadership of General Manager David Stearns. Initially picked up by the Mets in mid-2023 off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, Garrett has transformed into a reliable reliever, particularly when given ample rest between outings.
Garrett’s season has been marked by significant highs and lows. He started the year strongly, posting a 0.57 ERA in April and finishing the regular season with a 3.77 ERA, although his performance dipped in September. His strikeout numbers have been impressive, achieving 13 strikeouts per nine innings, a substantial improvement from his previous minor league high of 9.9.
His effectiveness varies greatly depending on rest. With two or three days of rest, Garrett’s ERA drops to 1.69 and 1.42 respectively, making him a valuable asset in the playoffs. However, his ERA spikes to 5.63 with just one day of rest, raising concerns about his reliability in back-to-back games.
In the postseason, Garrett has made three relief appearances, maintaining scoreless innings. He was recently called upon in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers, entering the game in relief after starter Kodai Senga struggled. Garrett took over with a runner on first and no outs, helping to stabilize the game.
Despite the Mets’ significant roster overhaul, Garrett’s continued success has earned him a spot on the team’s NLCS roster. His inclusion, along with other key players like Jeff McNeil and Luisangel Acuña, reflects the team’s strategic approach to utilizing both new and veteran talent.
As the Mets advance deeper into the playoffs, Garrett’s role may become even more prominent, especially if trust in other relievers diminishes. His ability to perform under pressure and his adaptability make him an essential part of the Mets’ playoff strategy.
