Born on December 20, 1940, in Madanapalli, Yamini began her dance journey at the age of five at the prestigious Kalakshetra Dance School in Chennai. There, she learned under the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale, which set the stage for her illustrious career.

Yamini Krishnamurthy didn’t limit herself to one dance form; she also mastered Kuchipudi and Odissi, learning from esteemed teachers along the way. Her dedication and talent earned her some of the highest honors in India’s arts, including the Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2016, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977.

Throughout her life, Yamini was not just a performer but also an inspiring teacher. She ran the Nritya Kaustubha institute in New Delhi, where she passed on her vast knowledge to young dancers. Her first solo performance at just 17 years old showcased her incredible skills and passion for dance.

Many fellow dancers took to social media to express their sorrow and condolences following her passing. Veteran dancer Rama Vaidyanathan described Yamini as someone who brought “power, beauty, and glamour” to Bharatanatyam, while the illustrious Sonal Mansingh commented on how she “blazed like a meteor” in the world of Indian dance.
