Renowned Playback Singer Bhavatharini Raja, Daughter of Maestro Ilayaraja, Passes Away at 47
Renowned playback singer Bhavatharini Raja, who was the daughter of music maestro Ilayaraja, has sadly passed away at the age of 47. She breathed her last in a hospital in Sri Lanka after battling a long illness.

Bhavatharini made her debut in the music industry with the soulful song ‘Masthana Masthana’ in the film ‘Raasaiyya’, composed by her father Ilayaraja, back in 1995. She went on to win the Best Female Playback Singer National Award for her melodious rendition of the track ‘Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu’ in the movie ‘Bharathi‘, also composed by her father, in the year 2000.

Not only did Bhavatharini showcase her remarkable vocal skills, but she also ventured into composing music for movies. She composed the music for actor Revathi’s directorial debut ‘Mitr, My Friend’ two years after winning the National Award. Throughout her illustrious career, she worked in various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films, leaving an indelible mark in the music industry.

Tragically, Bhavatharini’s demise comes just ahead of a scheduled concert in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on January 27 and 28, where her father Ilayaraja’s troupe was set to perform. Her passing has left not only her family and friends devastated but also countless fans across the nation mourning the loss of a talented artist.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin extended his heartfelt condolences on the untimely demise of Bhavatharini. He recalled her significant contribution to the film industry, particularly her National Award-winning song in the biopic ‘Bharatho’, which revolved around the life of the national poet Subramanya Bharathy. Chief Minister Stalin expressed that Bhavatharini’s absence would be deeply felt.

Bhavatharini Raja hailed from a musical family, with renowned musicians Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja as her brothers. Her loss has left a void in the music fraternity that will be hard to fill.
