Residents in Abuja Express Concerns Over Frequent Earth Tremors
Residents in various areas of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria have raised concerns following a series of earth tremors they have experienced in recent days. The impacted areas include Mpape, Maitama, Gishiri, and Katampe, which are known for their rocky terrains and rock blasting activities.
The Nigeria Geological Survey Agency has reported that over 40 tremors occurred in these areas between September 13 and 17, 2024, according to data collected from their monitoring station in Katampe. The agency recorded one mild event on September 13, six events on September 14, more than 21 events on September 15, and over 20 events on September 16, noting an increase in intensity and frequency during this period.
Residents are advised not to panic as the tremors are classified as weak to light, ranging from III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, posing a very low-level threat. However, some residents remain concerned and are contemplating relocating for safety. Tahir Usman of Katampe and Jimoh Halidu express their unease despite governmental assurances, citing past experiences where assurances have not allayed fears.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department has yet to release an assessment report, while the National Space Research and Development Agency insists that there is no imminent threat of significant earthquakes in the region. Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director General of the agency, has urged residents to avoid panic, ensuring that the situation is being closely monitored.
In response, the government, as stated by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, is analyzing datasets from seismological and GNSS stations to offer pertinent recommendations to the FCT Administration. Measures are being developed to mitigate seismic risks, ensuring residents’ safety remains a priority.
