Resignation of AMMA Executive Committee Amid Allegations

The entire 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has resigned following serious allegations of sexual misconduct against its members. This decision was made after an emergency online meeting held on August 27, 2024, which included high-profile members such as president Mohanlal.

The AMMA committee disbanded itself in light of the Justice Hema Committee report, which highlighted issues related to sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industry. As a response to these allegations, the current committee felt it was necessary to take accountability for the revelations and step down.

Actor Joy Mathew stated that the committee made this decision unanimously due to the grim nature of the allegations. The resignations came after actress Revathy Sampath accused certain members of sexual assault. The previous committee was elected in June 2024, with a tenure set to last until 2027.

Despite the resignation, the outgoing committee will remain in a temporary capacity to ensure ongoing welfare measures for AMMA members. A new executive committee is expected to be elected within two months during a general body meeting.

Following the release of the Hema Committee report, many actors have spoken out against the organization’s handling of sexual abuse allegations. Prominent actors, including Prithviraj and Jagadish, have publicly criticized AMMA for not acting decisively in these matters.

As more allegations emerge, the police have begun investigating additional claims against members of the film industry. High-profile figures, including filmmakers and legislators, have also been named in various complaints.

A special investigation team, comprising senior officers, has been formed to address the issues raised in the wake of the report. This team is tasked with ensuring that all complaints are properly examined and that action is taken where necessary.
