Rhys McClenaghan made headlines on Saturday, August 3rd, as he clinched the gold medal in the men’s pommel horse final at the Olympics. Representing Ireland, McClenaghan scored an impressive 15.533, securing his spot on the top of the podium.

He outperformed Nariman Kurbanov from Kazakhstan, who took home the silver with a score of 15.433. Stephen Nedoroscik from Team USA snagged the bronze, finishing with a score of 15.300.

In what would be his final Olympic appearance, Team GB‘s Whitlock narrowly missed out on a medal, ending up in fourth place with a score of 15.200. This was a big moment as he aimed to make history by becoming the first gymnast to win four medals in the same apparatus.

The pommel horse final kicked off with a fantastic routine from Kurbanov, who surprised everyone with his solid performance, scoring significantly higher than his qualification score.

Next up was Whitlock, a seasoned competitor and two-time gold medallist, who performed impressively in front of his five-year-old daughter, Willow. Despite a couple of minor mistakes, he finished just short of the podium.

McClenaghan was the clear favorite after leading in qualifications. He delivered an extraordinary and difficult routine, showing off superb form. His emotional reaction after finishing the routine was quite touching as he celebrated with his coach, Luke Carson.

Still, there were a few more gymnasts left to compete, including Nedoroscik, who has recently become a fan favorite. Known for his unique and laid-back style, he wowed the audience with his performance on the pommel horse, securing a spot on the podium.
