Rideau Canal Skateway Temporarily Closes Amidst Unpredictable Weather

The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa is set to temporarily close at 10 p.m. this evening, just four days after a portion of the popular skating destination opened for the season. The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced the closure, stating that it will remain closed until further notice. The decision aims to preserve the integrity of the ice surface and prevent excessive damage due to anticipated above-zero temperatures and potential rain in the coming days.

Many Ottawa residents breathed a sigh of relief when a section of the skateway opened on Sunday, following the unfortunate closure of the canal last year, which marked the first time in its history that it did not allow skating.

Ahead of the closure, some skaters had expressed their concerns about the condition of the ice. The NCC cautions that snow may hide potential hazards such as cracks, uneven areas, rough patches, or holes, highlighting the importance of ensuring safe conditions for skaters.

The NCC took to social media to acknowledge the disappointment surrounding the closure, using a gif of Margot Robbie depicting a crying scene from a Barbie movie. However, they reassured the public that plans are in place to reopen the skateway as soon as weather conditions and safety concerns allow.
