GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador — River Plate secured a crucial 3-2 victory over Barcelona SC in the Copa Libertadores on May 15, 2025, strengthening their lead in Group B.

The match at Estadio Monumental was marked by a strong start from River Plate, with Sebastián Driussi scoring the opening goal just eight minutes into the game. Driussi’s right-footed shot from outside the box beat goalkeeper José Contreras, establishing River’s dominance early.

Barcelona quickly equalized with a well-placed header from Octavio Rivero in the 27th minute. However, River responded six minutes later when Facundo Colidio netted the second goal with a precise shot, restoring their lead at 2-1.

In a spirited contest, both teams maintained high intensity, creating numerous chances. The second half saw River extend their lead to 3-1 after an assist from Borja to Franco Mastantuono, who pushed the ball into an open net.

Despite River’s apparent control, Barcelona fought back, with Cristian Martínez Quarta‘s own goal in the 56th minute narrowing the score to 3-2. The home side pressed for an equalizer but was unable to convert their opportunities.
